The Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday stepped up its attack on the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal, with Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi alleging a complete breakdown of law and order following reports of the beating of women in Bhangnamari village of South 24 Parganas district.

Addressing the media in New Delhi, Trivedi said the incident had deeply disturbed people across the state and raised serious concerns over women’s safety under the current dispensation led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“The people of West Bengal are deeply disturbed and outraged by the brutal beating of women in Bhangnamari village of South 24 Parganas district under Mamata Banerjee’s government. This shows that the safety of women is becoming a serious concern under the Trinamool Congress government,” Trivedi said.

The BJP leader linked the episode to what he described as a pattern of recent incidents in the state, alleging violence and political patronage. Referring to controversies in Sandeshkhali, Durgapur Medical College, and South 24 Parganas, Trivedi claimed that individuals involved were acting with political backing. “It appears that these people have become the political ‘Lashkars’ of the Trinamool Congress, acting as instruments of oppression against the public to fulfil political interests,” he said.

Taking a direct swipe at the chief minister, Trivedi alleged that governance and public safety had collapsed in the state. “Law and order have completely collapsed during the tenure of the West Bengal Chief Minister,” he said.

He also referred to recent remarks made by Banerjee against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, saying the BJP “sympathised” with her for the language used, which he claimed reflected political compulsion.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav backed Mamata Banerjee ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Speaking in Lucknow, Yadav said the BJP’s “conspiracy” would not succeed and predicted defeats for the party in West Bengal in 2026 and Uttar Pradesh in 2027.

“In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee is going to win by a large margin of votes. These BJP people conspire everywhere. This time, their conspiracy will not work,” Yadav said.

Political activity in West Bengal has intensified ahead of the Assembly elections, with national leaders stepping up their campaigns and statements as parties position themselves for the contest.
