A disciplined bowling effort from Chennai Super Kings restricted Mumbai Indians to 159/7 before a composed chase sealed an eight-wicket win in their Indian Premier League 2026 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday.
Chasing 160, CSK reached the target with 11 balls to spare, powered by unbeaten half-centuries from captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma. Gaikwad scored 67 off 48 balls, while Kartik made 54 off 40, as the duo stitched together a match-winning 98-run partnership.
Earlier, MI appeared well set at 90/2 after 10 overs but lost momentum sharply in the second half, managing just 69 runs in the last 10 overs while losing five wickets.
Early breakthroughs and middle-order resistance
Opting to bat first, MI struggled to get going against a tight CSK attack. Anshul Kamboj struck early, removing Will Jacks for 1, while Mukesh Choudhary kept things controlled in the powerplay.

Ryan Rickelton provided momentum with a brisk 37 off 24 balls, including five sixes, as MI posted 57 runs in the powerplay. He shared a 50-plus stand for the second wicket before falling to Noor Ahmad.
Naman Dhir then anchored the innings with a crucial 57, stabilising MI after early setbacks. Suryakumar Yadav contributed 21 but was dismissed by Ramakrishna Ghosh, while Tilak Varma struggled before falling for 5.
As MI looked to accelerate, Jamie Overton removed Dhir, triggering a collapse. Robin Minz fell cheaply, and skipper Hardik Pandya endured a scratchy innings as MI managed only 39 runs in the final five overs.
Kamboj led CSK’s bowling effort with three wickets, while Noor Ahmad picked up two. Ghosh and Overton chipped in with one each.
CSK chase steadied after early blow
The chase began with a setback when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Sanju Samson for 11 in the second over. Urvil Patel then injected pace with a quick 24 off 12 balls before falling to Allah Ghazanfar, leaving CSK at 62/2 at the end of the powerplay.

From there, Gaikwad took control, rotating strike and punishing loose deliveries. He brought up his fifty in 34 balls, marking his second consecutive half-century of the season. Kartik complemented him at the other end, reaching his fifty in 39 balls.
The pair ensured there were no further hiccups, guiding CSK home comfortably and securing their fourth win of the season.
For MI, Bumrah (1/20) and Allah Ghazanfar (1/40) were the only wicket-takers.
With the win, CSK moved to sixth place on the IPL 2026 points table with eight points from nine matches.
