Mitchell Marsh’s explosive 90 off 38 balls powered Lucknow Super Giants to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in their IPL 2026 clash at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday.

Chasing 188, LSG completed the target in just 16.4 overs with 20 balls remaining, after Marsh dismantled the CSK bowling attack during a brutal opening partnership with Josh Inglis. Nicholas Pooran then sealed the chase with a late assault that left CSK struggling for answers.

Earlier, CSK had posted 187/5 after recovering from early setbacks through a composed innings by Kartik Sharma and a late flourish from Shivam Dube.

LSG’s chase began at breakneck pace. Marsh and Inglis attacked from the outset, racing to 67 without loss in the first five overs. Marsh reached his half-century in only 21 deliveries and tore into Anshul Kamboj during the fifth over, smashing four consecutive sixes and a boundary to collect 28 runs.

By the end of the powerplay, LSG had surged to 86/0, putting the chase firmly under their control. The scoring rate never dipped as the hosts reached 124/0 after 10 overs.

While Marsh dominated the strokeplay, Inglis anchored the stand with a measured 36 off 32 balls. The pair added 135 runs for the opening wicket before Inglis was dismissed by Mukesh Choudhary in the 12th over.

Marsh’s innings ended on the very next delivery in unfortunate fashion. Nicholas Pooran struck the ball firmly back at Mukesh Choudhary, whose fingertips deflected the ball onto the stumps at the non-striker’s end with Marsh outside his crease. Marsh departed for 90, having struck nine fours and seven sixes.

CSK briefly fought back when Spencer Johnson dismissed Abdul Samad for seven, but Pooran quickly extinguished any hopes of a turnaround. With 24 needed from the final four overs, the West Indian batter hammered Kamboj for four successive sixes to finish the contest in emphatic style. Pooran remained unbeaten on 32 from 17 balls.

For CSK, Mukesh Choudhary returned figures of 1/24 in three overs, while Spencer Johnson picked up 1/39.

Earlier, CSK’s innings had started steadily after being asked to bat first. Sanju Samson and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad took the visitors to 20 without loss in two overs before Akash Singh turned the innings around.

Akash first removed Gaikwad for 13 in the fourth over and then dismissed Samson for 20 in the sixth, reducing CSK to 37/2. He struck again in the eighth over to send back Urvil Patel for six, leaving CSK struggling at 61/3.

At the halfway stage, Chennai had crawled to 71/3 before Kartik Sharma and Dewald Brevis rebuilt the innings. The pair pushed CSK to 108/3 in 13 overs and briefly shifted momentum back towards the visitors.

Kartik brought up his half-century off 35 deliveries, his second fifty of the season, but Mohammed Shami removed Brevis for 25 during the same over. Shahbaz Ahmed then claimed the key wicket of Kartik in the 16th over after the batter had scored a well-made 71.

A late unbeaten stand between Shivam Dube and Prashant Veer lifted CSK further. Dube struck 32 off 16 balls while Veer remained unbeaten on 13 as Chennai finished on 187/5.

Akash Singh was the standout bowler for LSG with figures of 3/26, while Mohammed Shami and Shahbaz Ahmed picked up one wicket each.

With the defeat, CSK remained sixth on the IPL 2026 points table with 12 points from 12 matches, having registered six wins and six losses.
