Noufal PN’s first-half goal sealed a crucial win for Mumbai City FC. Lachenpa’s saves deny Mohun Bagan as Islanders go top.

Mumbai City FC secured a narrow 1-0 win over Mohun Bagan Super Giant at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Friday, with Noufal PN’s first-half strike proving decisive.

The result sees Mumbai City move to the top of the Indian Super League standings, extending their unbeaten run and going one point clear of Mohun Bagan, who drop to second place with 13 points.

The match began at a high tempo, with Mohun Bagan dominating possession early while Mumbai City looked to strike on the counter. Noufal PN had the first chance in the sixth minute but fired over after being set up by Lallianzuala Chhangte.

Mohun Bagan continued to press, with Liston Colaco’s effort blocked in the 19th minute. Mumbai responded swiftly, as Chhangte broke through on goal but was denied by Vishal Kaith, who stood firm before the defence cleared.

Mumbai City took the lead in the 27th minute through a well-worked move. A quick switch of play opened space for Noufal PN, who finished calmly into the far corner to put the visitors ahead.

Mohun Bagan pushed for an equaliser before the break but were denied repeatedly by goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa. He produced a diving save to stop Jason Cummings’ header and followed up with key interventions against Dimitri Petratos.

At the other end, Mumbai City continued to threaten, with Kaith making consecutive saves to keep his side in contention as the visitors carried a 1-0 lead into half-time.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Mohun Bagan controlling possession and Mumbai City remaining dangerous on the counter. Both sides created chances, but finishing and goalkeeping proved decisive.

Maclaren came close for Mumbai City in the 60th minute, while Petratos saw an equaliser ruled out for offside shortly after. Lachenpa continued his strong performance, making another crucial save in the 69th minute.

Mohun Bagan maintained pressure in the closing stages, with Sahal Abdul Samad and Petratos both going close late on. However, Mumbai City’s disciplined defensive structure held firm.

The final whistle confirmed a hard-fought victory for Mumbai City FC, ending Mohun Bagan’s unbeaten run and sending the Islanders into the international break at the top of the table.
