Yemen’s Houthi group has claimed responsibility for launching missile and drone attacks on Israel, signalling a further escalation in the ongoing West Asia conflict.
According to statements issued by the group, ballistic missiles were fired at what it described as sensitive military targets in Israel. Israeli authorities confirmed detecting a missile launched from Yemen and said air defence systems were activated. Initial reports indicated the projectile was intercepted, with no immediate reports of casualties or major damage.
The Houthis said the strike was in response to continued military actions affecting allied regions, including Iran, Lebanon, Iraq and Palestinian territories. The group stated that its operations would continue until what it termed “aggression” across these fronts ends.
In a separate announcement, the Houthis said they carried out a second military operation involving cruise missiles and drones targeting sites in southern Israel. The group claimed the operation achieved its objectives and was coordinated with allied forces in the region.
This marks a significant expansion of the conflict, with the Houthis directly targeting Israel during the current phase of hostilities. The development adds a new front to an already volatile regional situation involving Israel, the United States and Iran.
The Houthis have previously targeted commercial shipping in the Red Sea, citing links to Israel and its allies. Their increased involvement raises concerns over the security of key trade routes and potential disruptions to global energy supplies.
Diplomatic efforts to contain the situation have so far made limited progress. With multiple groups now involved, there are growing fears that continued retaliatory actions could draw more actors into the conflict and deepen instability across West Asia.
