Israel launched preemptive missile strikes on Iran early Saturday, triggering air raid sirens across the country and prompting authorities to advise citizens to seek shelter.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the strikes were carried out to neutralise immediate threats. Sirens were sounded nationwide as a precaution against potential missile and drone retaliation.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz declared a nationwide special state of emergency under the country’s Civil Defense Law, warning that attacks against Israeli territory and civilians could follow in the immediate timeframe.
Following a situational assessment, the IDF announced changes to Home Front Command guidelines, shifting the country from “Full Activity” to “Essential Activity”. The revised measures prohibit educational activities, public gatherings and non-essential workplace operations.
Explosions were reported in Tehran, according to Iranian state media. Iranian authorities also reported disruptions to mobile phone networks in parts of eastern and western Tehran, along with weakened internet connectivity in some areas.
A security source indicated that the United States was involved in the strikes. Iranian officials stated that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been moved from Tehran to a secure location.
The developments come amid ongoing tensions between Tehran and Washington over nuclear negotiations. US President Donald Trump, speaking in Texas on Friday, described Iran as “very difficult” and “very dangerous” and said the United States faces a “big decision” in its talks with Tehran. He added that any potential agreement must be “meaningful”.
The third round of negotiations between Iran and the United States was held in Geneva on Thursday, with another round scheduled to take place.
The situation remains fluid, with heightened military readiness and emergency measures in place across Israel.
