French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Damascus on Monday for an official visit to Syria, where he met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and reaffirmed France’s support for a “sovereign Syria, united in its diversity and at peace with its neighbours.”
Macron’s visit was confirmed by the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, which said Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani received the French president on his arrival in the Syrian capital.
In a post on X, Macron said he had travelled to express France’s commitment to the Syrian people. “For a sovereign Syria, united in its diversity and at peace with its neighbours. Together, let us open a new chapter of stability and peace,” he wrote.

The meeting comes as Syria’s authorities seek to rebuild international engagement after years of conflict and political isolation. No official details of agreements or decisions from the talks were available at the time of publication.
Security remains a concern in the capital. A bomb blast at a crowded café on Al-Nasr Street in Damascus’ Al-Hijaz area on July 2 killed 10 people and injured 21 others, according to Syria’s Health Ministry. The ministry said the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device containing metal fragments.
