Mumbai’s government, private and municipal schools and colleges will remain closed on Tuesday as heavy rain and strong winds continue to affect the city and its suburbs, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
The closure was announced as waterlogging disrupted road traffic and affected local train and flight operations across parts of the city. The civic body said emergency teams, dewatering pumps and additional personnel had been deployed at locations prone to flooding.
The India Meteorological Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rain, with isolated extremely heavy falls, over Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra. Its alert, issued on July 6 and valid until midnight on July 7, advised residents to avoid low-lying areas, drainage channels and road underpasses that may flood quickly.
Mumbai recorded heavy rainfall over the previous two days, according to civic-body figures cited in the report. Mumbai city recorded 300 mm of rain, while the eastern and western suburbs recorded 380 mm and 345 mm, respectively.
The rain was accompanied by winds of 70 to 80 kmph, leading to reports of uprooted trees in several parts of the city. The BMC said its Disaster Management Control Room was monitoring the situation round the clock, with rescue teams kept on standby for incidents involving fallen trees, electrical faults and unsafe structures.
The Maharashtra government has also advised private companies to allow employees to work from home where feasible. On Monday, non-essential government and semi-government employees were granted a half-day to return home before conditions worsened.
The BMC has called a special general body meeting on July 9 to discuss monsoon preparedness and rain-related civic issues.
