Senior Goa politician Churchill Alemao has indicated that he is prepared to return to the Congress party if its leadership extends an invitation, saying he has never emotionally distanced himself from the organisation.

Speaking to reporters, Alemao described the Congress as a party that stands by its committed workers and said his connection with it remains intact.

“Congress is like an ocean, and those who protect it do not leave it easily, unlike some other parties,” he said.

Alemao revealed that he recently met senior Congress leader Girish Chodankar to congratulate him. According to Alemao, the meeting lasted nearly an hour and covered a range of issues. He described the interaction as cordial and said Chodankar and others were pleased to meet him.

Hinting at a possible return to the party, Alemao said, “I am interested in joining Congress. In my heart, I never left the party. If Congress calls me, I can return.”

He also expressed confidence about the political future of his daughter, Valanka Alemao, stating that she would contest from the Navelim constituency.

The former chief minister praised former Congress president Sonia Gandhi for her role in safeguarding the party and providing leadership over the years.

“I have always respected Sonia Gandhi and have never spoken against her,” Alemao said.

Paying tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, he described him as an effective leader and added that Rahul Gandhi has the potential to become the Prime Minister of India in the future.

Speaking about his political influence, Alemao claimed that his support base remains strong and said the voters who have traditionally backed him continue to remain with him. He also asserted that Savio Alemao enjoys broad public support and revealed that discussions regarding Savio’s candidature are taking place at the central level.

Alemao concluded by thanking the people of Benaulim and Navelim for their continued support throughout his political career. He credited them for his journey in public life and stressed the importance of preserving Goa’s secular character, describing it as one of the state’s greatest strengths that must be protected.
