Congress leader Dr Ketan Bhatikar died early Friday morning following a suspected snake bite near the Mollem Biodiversity area in Goa. He was 38.
According to medical officials, Bhatikar was brought to the Primary Health Centre at Dharbandora in a 108 ambulance at around 3.30 am. Doctors stated that he was unresponsive when admitted and had visible blue discolouration on his lips. He was declared dead at approximately 3.45 am.
Police said the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed and that a post-mortem examination has been ordered. Investigators are probing the possibility of a snake bite after preliminary observations at the scene and at the hospital.
The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, which officials said will determine the precise cause of death.
Dr Bhatikar, a physiotherapist by profession, had earlier been named as the Congress candidate for the Ponda by-election. However, the election was later halted following intervention by the High Court.
The Congress party expressed grief over his death and said his contribution to public life and the organisation would be remembered.
In a statement, the party said his “dedication to public service and contribution to society and the party would be remembered with respect and gratitude.” The party also conveyed condolences to his family, friends and supporters.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant also condoled Bhatikar’s death, describing it as a “profound loss to the medical community.” He extended sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul.
