DKA marks Konkani Cinema Day, seeks state recognition

DKA celebrates Konkani Cinema Day, honouring pioneers of the industry. Call made to declare April 24 a state event to promote Konkani cinema.

Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) marked Konknni Cholchitr Dis (Konkani Cinema Day) on April 24 at Mae dos Pobres High School, commemorating the release of the first Konkani film Mogacho Aunddo, which premiered on April 24, 1950. The film was produced and directed by Al Jerry Braganza. The programme began with floral tributes to Braganza, recognising his contribution to Konkani cinema.

Addressing the gathering, DKA President Fr. Myron Jeson Barreto emphasised the need to promote Konkani films and preserve their legacy. He said Konkani cinema forms an important part of Goan identity and that early filmmakers deserve greater recognition. He also urged the government to formally observe the day each year. “Government should take initiative to celebrate ‘Konknni Cholchitr Dis’ every year on 24 April as an state event,” he stated.

Writer Vincy Quadros, the speaker for the programme, echoed the demand for state-level recognition. He spoke about the significance of the day and the need to strengthen efforts to promote Konkani cinema, while also outlining its historical relevance.

Chief guest Fr. Vital Miranda, Parish Priest of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Church, Nuvem, appreciated the work of the Akademi in promoting Romi Konkani literature and Goan culture. He acknowledged the organisation’s role in spreading awareness about Konkani cinema and expressed continued support for Roman Konkani.

A musical performance by Lenoy Gomendes and his group was a highlight of the event, featuring classic Konkani film songs. The performers included Anthony San Fernandes, C. D. Silva, Andrea Rego, Joyd Antao, Akishia Fernandes, Anora Pereira, and Janeshka Monteiro.

The programme was attended by Headmistress Melba Da Costa, along with teachers, students of Mae dos Pobres High School, and other invitees. DKA Secretary Agnelo Borim compered the event, while Vice-President Anthony San Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks.
