Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari collected his victory certificate after winning from the Bhabanipur and Nandigram Assembly constituencies on Monday, marking a significant moment in the state’s political landscape.
Speaking after his win, Adhikari attributed his victory in Nandigram to Hindu voters and alleged that Muslim voters consolidated behind the Trinamool Congress (TMC). “This time I won the election with almost ten thousand votes. The Hindu people of Nandigram made me win again. There, the entire Muslim vote went to TMC. I will work for the Hindus of Nandigram,” he said.
In Nandigram, Adhikari defeated TMC candidate Pabitra Kar by a margin of 9,665 votes, reinforcing his political hold in the constituency.
The BJP leader also launched a sharp attack on the TMC, claiming the party’s future was uncertain. “TMC will be finished. Within 24 hours, it will be destroyed, it will be finished. This corrupt, family-oriented party has no ideology,” he said.
He further stated that the BJP would fulfil its electoral promises. “We will do the work that Home Minister Amit Shah had declared in the manifesto, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has guaranteed again and again. We will complete it,” he added.
In a major upset in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost the Bhabanipur seat to Adhikari by 15,105 votes. Adhikari secured 73,917 votes, while Banerjee polled 58,812 votes. CPI(M) candidate Shrijeev Biswas trailed far behind.
Banerjee’s defeat in her stronghold is being viewed as a symbolic shift in West Bengal politics, underscoring changing voter dynamics in the state.
According to data released by the Election Commission of India, the BJP secured 206 of the 294 Assembly seats. The TMC won 81 seats and was leading in one constituency at the time of reporting. Congress secured two seats, while Humayun Kabir’s AJUP also won two. CPI(M) managed to win just one seat.
