Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi on Tuesday said that previous warnings issued by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi about risks to India’s energy supply have “proven to be true.”

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, she said Rahul Gandhi’s earlier statements about looming challenges in the energy sector were now being borne out by recent developments.

“Many times it has happened that what Rahul ji has said has come true,” Priyanka Gandhi said while responding to questions about the current pooling of natural gas resources.

Her remarks came after the government invoked provisions of the Essential Commodities Act to safeguard the domestic energy market and manage supply constraints.

According to the Petroleum Ministry, a control order has been issued directing refineries and petrochemical units to maximise the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Key hydrocarbon streams are also being diverted to the LPG pool to ensure uninterrupted supply of cooking gas across the country.

The ministry said the order establishes a priority system for the distribution of natural gas to manage current supply limitations.

Under the new mandate, domestic piped gas for households and compressed natural gas (CNG) for vehicles will receive 100 per cent assured supply. Other industrial sectors will face calibrated supply caps based on their average consumption over the previous six months.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav also criticised the government’s approach to the issue, saying it was not showing the seriousness required to address energy security concerns.

Earlier on March 5, Rahul Gandhi warned that India could face challenges related to oil supplies, citing global instability and potential disruptions to energy routes.

“The world has entered a volatile phase. Stormy seas lie ahead. India’s oil supplies are under threat, with more than 40% of our imports transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The situation is even worse for LPG and LNG. The conflict has reached our backyard, with an Iranian warship sunk in the Indian Ocean. Yet the Prime Minister has said nothing,” Gandhi wrote on X.
