
The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for Assembly elections in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with polling set to take place in April.
Kerala will vote in a single phase on April 9, while Tamil Nadu will go to the polls on April 23. Counting of votes in both states will be conducted on May 4.
The Model Code of Conduct has come into effect immediately following the announcement.
In Kerala, the election will be held for the 140-member Legislative Assembly, whose current tenure ends on May 23, 2026.
According to the Election Commission, around 2.7 crore voters are expected to participate in the elections in the state. The final electoral roll released after the Special Intensive Revision lists 2,69,53,644 voters, including 1,31,26,048 male voters, 1,38,27,319 female voters and 227 third-gender voters.
The last date for filing nominations in Kerala is March 23, with scrutiny scheduled for March 24. Candidates may withdraw their nominations until March 26.
In Tamil Nadu, elections will be held for the 234-member Legislative Assembly. The last date for filing nominations is April 6, with scrutiny on April 7 and the final date for withdrawal of nominations on April 9.
According to the final electoral roll, Tamil Nadu has a total electorate of 5,67,07,380 voters, including 2,77,38,925 male voters, 2,89,60,838 female voters and 7,617 third-gender voters.
The elections are expected to see a contest between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the National Democratic Alliance led by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
