Early counting trends for the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly elections indicate a surprise performance by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam), which is leading in 73 seats according to initial data from the Election Commission of India.
The AIADMK-led alliance, anchored by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, is following with leads in 60 seats, while the DMK-led alliance, led by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, is trailing in third place with leads in 37 constituencies.
Election Commission data from the second round of counting — with over 20 rounds expected — shows TVK candidates opening up notable margins in several seats. In Madavaram, TVK candidate M L Vijayprabhu is leading by more than 8,406 votes, reflecting early momentum for the party in its debut election.
TVK chief Vijay is also leading in the Tiruchirappalli East constituency after the first round, with a margin of 1,669 votes.

The state is witnessing a rare three-way contest, with all three major alliances in contention. However, visuals from Chennai indicated early concern within DMK ranks, with activity slowing at party headquarters Anna Arivalayam as workers reacted to trailing trends compared to the party’s previous tally of 133 seats.
Independent data from television networks suggests even stronger gains for TVK, placing the party ahead in as many as 98 seats, compared to 72 for the AIADMK alliance and 62 for the DMK alliance. These figures, while not official, reinforce the narrative of a competitive and unpredictable electoral outcome.
Counting Continues Across States
Vote counting began with postal ballots, followed by Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) counts from 8:30 am. Round-wise updates are being published in real time on official platforms.
Beyond Tamil Nadu, counting is also underway across 823 constituencies in key regions including West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
With multiple rounds still remaining, early leads may shift as the day progresses, leaving room for changes in the final outcome.
