Citizens of Margao have submitted a series of representations to the Superintendent of Police, calling for strict implementation of Supreme Court directives relating to noise and air pollution during public celebrations.
In their first communication in September 2024, the citizens drew attention to the excessive use of high-decibel firecrackers and bombs, in violation of the Government of Goa’s notification, issued in line with multiple writ petitions before the Supreme Court. The letter pointed out that despite clear restrictions on fireworks containing barium salts and on high-noise explosives, such practices continued unchecked, causing inconvenience to residents, with particular impact on children, senior citizens, and animals.
A subsequent letter issued by them today, reiterated these concerns and noted that the situation had persisted for the past two years across festive periods. The citizens urged the police to take proactive measures in advance of upcoming celebrations, reminding that non-compliance with Supreme Court orders constitutes direct contempt of court.
Both letters, signed by Arch. Carlos Gracias and others, stressed that the appeals were not directed against festivities themselves but against practices that compromise public health, disturb peace, and disregard judicial directives. Copies of the representations were also sent to the Collector, South Goa for further attention.
The citizens’ appeal reflects a wider call for responsible celebration practices across the state, balancing cultural expression with the legal requirement to safeguard the environment, vulnerable groups, and the community at large.
