The Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) marked World Book and Copyright Day with a programme at the Reginald Fernandes Conference Hall in Panaji, highlighting the role of literature in society and the need to strengthen the Konkani publishing ecosystem.
A key highlight of the event was the release of ‘Gõycho Pormoll’, a magazine published by DKA, alongside the official launch of ‘Jivitachie Machier Lharancho Khell’, a new poetry collection by Fr (Dr) Simon Rico Fernandes. The book was described as a work that encourages readers to “introspect, reflect, and act,” and was noted as a significant addition to Konkani literature.
Journalist, publisher and founder of Goa, 1556, Frederick Noronha, attended as the resource person and stressed the need to build a stronger publishing framework for Romi Konkani works. “Literature is valuable, but it must also be marketable,” Noronha said. “Authors and supporters must take an active role in the distribution and promotion of books to ensure they reach the hands of readers.”
Chief Guest John Silveira, former State Co-ordinator for Goa Samagra Shiksha, underscored the importance of creating literature for younger audiences. He said fostering reading habits among children is essential to developing future writers and readers.
The programme began with a welcome address by DKA Secretary Agnelo Borim, followed by the presidential address from DKA President Fr Myron Jeson Barreto. Emphasising the enduring value of books, Fr Barreto said, “Books are our treasure. To gain knowledge, we must physically open these books and commit to reading them.”
