Manipal Hospital Goa has completed 100 robotic-assisted knee surgeries, marking a development in the use of technology-driven orthopaedic care in the state.
The procedures were carried out under the supervision of orthopaedic surgeon Dr Rohan R Desai and his team, using the VELYS robotic-assisted system designed for total and partial knee replacements.
According to the hospital, the system enables surgeons to perform procedures with greater precision through real-time data and intraoperative guidance. It also allows for improved soft-tissue balancing and personalised surgical planning.
Doctors at the hospital said the use of robotic assistance has contributed to reduced post-operative pain, faster recovery, and improved mobility among patients.
Dr Desai stated that the milestone reflects the growing adoption of robotic-assisted procedures in Goa. He added that the hospital is currently using the system for knee replacements, with patients reporting better recovery and long-term outcomes.
The hospital also noted that the technology supports cruciate-retaining knee replacement procedures, which preserve the posterior cruciate ligament and are aimed at maintaining more natural joint movement.
Hospital Director Surendra Prasad said the increase in robotic-assisted procedures reflects a shift towards technology-based healthcare delivery in the state. He added that such systems are expected to improve access to advanced orthopaedic care.
Officials said patient interest in robotic-assisted surgeries has increased, citing lower complication rates and improved functional recovery.
Manipal Hospital Goa stated that it plans to continue expanding its orthopaedic services with the use of advanced surgical technologies.
