Chirag Naik begins hunger strike over Margao garden project. Opposition leaders question need, transparency and parking impact.

Congress leader Chirag Naik on Friday began a hunger strike opposing the Margao Municipal Council’s proposal to construct a two-storeyed building at the Margao Municipal Garden, demanding that the project be scrapped.

Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao extended support to Naik, describing the proposed construction as unnecessary. He highlighted existing parking constraints in the city and underlined the social and emotional importance of the garden for residents. Alemao also accused the government of ignoring public sentiment.

Margao police objected after Naik set up a mattress at the protest site. Despite being asked to remove it, Naik continued his hunger strike, maintaining his opposition to the project.

The issue also drew a response from Vijai Sardesai, who said councillors from his party had opposed the proposal but it was cleared through majority support. He alleged that the decision was pushed through without adequate discussion.

Sardesai called for clarity on the purpose of the proposed building, stating that the Aga Khan Garden remains a key public space in Margao. He noted that the town is already facing significant parking challenges and warned that additional activity in the area could worsen congestion.

He further claimed that similar projects may follow, alleging that the Margao master plan was prepared without sufficient public consultation. Sardesai compared the situation with earlier planning processes, saying due procedure had been followed in the past.

He also questioned the council’s inability to address ongoing parking issues in the commercial capital and urged authorities to clearly explain the need for the proposed construction.
