Adv. & Social Activist Pratima Coutinho has strongly criticised Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut over her remarks targeting Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, calling the statements derogatory and inappropriate.
Speaking in response to a viral video, she objected to Ranaut’s claim that women in Parliament feel uncomfortable in Rahul Gandhi’s presence. She also took exception to the use of the term “tapori,” describing it as a loose and disrespectful remark.
Coutinho said such statements should not be made for political gain and urged Ranaut to be mindful of her language. She emphasised that Rahul Gandhi is an experienced political leader, describing him as well-educated, grounded, and committed to public service.
Drawing from her own experience in the Congress party, Coutinho said she had worked closely with Rahul Gandhi during her tenure in the Youth Congress and Mahila Congress. She noted that she had observed his conduct, behaviour, and interactions across multiple party conventions held in different parts of the country.
She further referred to Rahul Gandhi’s political background, highlighting the legacy of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, both of whom were assassinated. Coutinho said this legacy should be respected and not trivialised through public statements.
Calling the remarks “in bad taste,” Coutinho demanded an apology from Ranaut and said the comments had hurt the sentiments of many people across the country.
