The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has taken a strong early lead in the Assam Assembly election counting, crossing the halfway mark in initial trends released by the Election Commission of India.
According to early figures, the NDA is ahead in 87 constituencies, positioning it comfortably to form the government if trends hold. Within the alliance, the BJP is leading in 71 seats. Its allies, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), are leading in 9 and 7 seats respectively.
On the opposition side, the Indian National Congress is trailing with leads in 21 constituencies. Its ally, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), is ahead in one seat. Other parties including the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) are also leading in one seat each.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed confidence in the outcome, stating, “The result will be as we had expected. The NDA government will be formed again under the leadership of the BJP. We said this with confidence that we are close to 100 (seats) with our allies.”
Meanwhile, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi said the party is maintaining a close watch on the counting process through a network of observers deployed across the state.
“We are hoping for a positive result in Assam. We will see the feedback the people have given us till the end in the number of votes, we will keep an eye on every round,” Gogoi told reporters.
Highlighting vigilance measures, he added, “We have sent various observers across the state, so that we can see if there is any weakness from the administration then we will that information quickly.”
Congress leaders said party workers and observers have been stationed at multiple counting centres and district-level monitoring hubs to track developments and flag any irregularities.
“Now only the first round has happened, we have taken information from our party workers about the EVMs, whether there was any problem with transportation. We have monitoring centres in each zilla, district, with our people there. Our party has prepared everything,” Gogoi said.
With counting still underway, the early trends indicate a clear edge for the NDA, though final results will determine the composition of the next government in Assam.
