Om Birla urged legislators to rise above politics and serve citizens with integrity. He highlighted youth leadership and innovation as key to India’s development goals.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Thursday called on lawmakers to rise above personal and political interests and work with integrity to meet public expectations, while addressing the First CPA India Region Zone VII Conference in Goa.

Birla said elected representatives carry the responsibility of translating people’s aspirations into action, strengthening democratic institutions, and ensuring governance that is transparent, inclusive, and responsive. He stressed that maintaining public trust requires vision, dedication, and a consistent focus on welfare.

Highlighting the role of young legislators, Birla said they would play a crucial part in achieving the goal of a developed India by 2047. He noted that their energy and ideas can help drive innovation, promote inclusive growth, and strengthen democratic systems.

Speaking on legislative functioning, Birla underlined the importance of healthy competition among state legislatures to improve governance and public welfare. He also pointed to increasing voter turnout since 1952 as a sign of the strength of India’s parliamentary democracy.

He emphasised the need for lawmakers to adopt research, innovation, and technology to address public concerns effectively. While noting the growing role of tools such as artificial intelligence, he said sensitivity and direct engagement with citizens remain essential.

Birla also urged legislators to deepen their understanding of parliamentary rules and procedures, stating that meaningful participation in debates often leads to stronger leadership.

Referring to Goa, he noted its tourism sector, cultural heritage, and contribution to democratic processes. He added that states within CPA Zone VII — Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa — can benefit from sharing best practices, particularly in areas such as coastal development.

He said collaboration, innovation, and adherence to democratic values will be key to sustaining India’s growth.

Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Harivansh, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Maharashtra Legislative Council Chairperson Ram Shinde, and Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar also addressed the conference. Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker Ganesh Gaonkar delivered the welcome address, while Deputy Speaker Joshua D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks.
