The All India Congress Committee on Saturday announced Priyanka Gandhi as the chairperson of the Assam Congress screening committee ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
According to the announcement, the screening committee will include Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, Imran Masood and Dr. Sirivella Prasad as members.
The party also named Madhusudan Mistry as chairperson of the Kerala Congress screening committee, while T. S. Singh Deo was appointed chairperson for the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry screening committee. B. K. Hariprasad was named chairperson of the West Bengal screening committee.
The appointments come as the Congress steps up preparations in poll-bound states ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, aiming to strengthen its organisational and candidate selection processes.
Assam is currently governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party, which retained power in the 2021 Assembly elections under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Earlier, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi criticised the state government, alleging a lack of long-term vision and claiming that welfare schemes had reduced women and economically weaker sections to beneficiaries without ensuring empowerment.
Addressing a press conference in Tinsukia, Gogoi said the BJP would not be able to mislead what he described as the conscious electorate of Assam. He alleged that while the government had announced financial assistance for temple attendants, no concrete steps had been taken to make sattras economically self-reliant.
Gogoi said the upcoming Assam Assembly elections would be closely contested and asserted that genuine development could only be achieved through schemes that addressed the real economic challenges faced by ordinary people. He added that a future Congress government would study ways to introduce new programmes focused on long-term economic empowerment, particularly for women.
