The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Goa unit has urged authorities to expedite the implementation of Scheduled Tribe (ST) reservation in the Goa Legislative Assembly ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
In a memorandum submitted to Chief Electoral Officer Sanjay Goyal, BJP Goa President Damu Naik said that despite constituting a significant section of Goa’s population, the Scheduled Tribe community continues to remain without reserved representation in the 40-member Legislative Assembly.
Naik referred to the legislation that received Presidential assent last year for the readjustment of representation of Scheduled Tribes in the Goa Legislative Assembly. He stated that the process is now awaiting notification of the “appointed date” by the Central Government, which would enable the commencement of the delimitation exercise required for implementing the reservation.
The BJP has requested the Chief Electoral Officer to coordinate with the Election Commission of India and the Ministry of Home Affairs to facilitate the notification process. The party also called for all demographic and census-related data required for the delimitation exercise to be kept ready so that the process can move forward without delay.
“Implementing ST reservation before the next Assembly elections is a matter of social justice and democratic inclusion,” Naik said.
He further cautioned that any delay in initiating the process could result in the tribal community being deprived of its constitutionally mandated representation for another five years.
According to the memorandum, copies of the representation have also been forwarded to the Chief Election Commissioner in New Delhi for necessary action.
