The Goa Cricket Association (GCA) on Friday inaugurated new floodlights at its ground in Porvorim, marking a major infrastructure upgrade for the sport in the state.
The floodlights, installed at a cost of ₹4 crore, meet international standards and are suitable for high-level matches, including those played under Indian Premier League (IPL) conditions. The lighting system provides an illumination level of 2,500 lux, enabling evening training sessions and supporting high-quality match telecasts.
Former GCA president Chetan Dessai said the development would help players adapt to modern formats such as One Day and T20 matches, which are increasingly played under lights in domestic competitions like the Ranji Trophy.
The association has also set up 20 cricket centres across Goa as part of its efforts to develop grassroots talent and provide structured training opportunities for aspiring players.
Dessai said further upgrades are planned, including a physiotherapy centre and a modern gymnasium aimed at strengthening player support systems.
Vinod Phadke, president of the Goa Veterans Cricket Association, said cricket activity in Goa slows during the monsoon season, affecting player development. To address this, the association plans to send young players to other states during the off-season to increase match exposure.
The inauguration event also featured a match between the President’s XI and Secretary’s XI. Bollywood singer Shabir Kumar rendered the national anthem at the start of the programme.
GCA president Mahesh Dessai and secretary Tulshidas Shetye were among those present.
