Vidya Vihar win Mormugao Cluster 11 U-17 girls chess title

Vidya Vihar High School, Thana, Cortalim won the Mormugao Cluster 11 Under-17 Girls Chess Tournament. The team will now compete at the state-level tournament.

Vidya Vihar High School, Thana, Cortalim won the Mormugao Taluka Cluster 11 Level Under-17 Girls Chess Tournament 2026-27 at the Indoor Hall, Chicalim Sports Complex, on July 8.

The team finished with seven match points and 13 total points to take the title in the Mini Secondary School Sports tournament, which had participation from 17 institutions.

Mother of Mercy High School finished second with seven match points and 11.5 total points. Shree Susenashram Vidyalaya placed third after securing six match points and 12.5 total points.

Vidya Vihar’s winning team comprised Rebecca Sayi, Shrawani M. Ingane, Veera Gawade, Ashrey Kolkar and Bhakti Mangasuli.

The tournament was overseen by chess arbiters Pradosh T. Redkar, Swapnil Hoble and Suraj Sawant. Deepak Venkattappa, physical education teacher at Vidya Vihar High School; Mangesh B. Laad, assistant physical education officer for Cluster 11; and Manthan V. Adpaikar, taluka sports organiser for Cluster 11, were also present.

With the win, Vidya Vihar High School has qualified for the State-Level Under-17 Girls Chess Tournament 2026-27.
