BVB Narayan Bandekar wins Mormugao U-17 chess title

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Narayan Bandekar School topped the Mormugao Cluster 11 U-17 boys chess tournament. The team will now compete at the state level.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Narayan Bandekar School won the Mormugao Taluka, Cluster 11 Level Chess U-17 Boys Tournament 2026-27 at the Indoor Hall of the Chicalim Sports Complex on Tuesday.

The school finished with 10 match points and 17½ total points to secure the title in the Mini Secondary School Sports tournament organised by the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs.

St. Joseph Institute, Vasco, finished second with eight match points and 16 total points. Mt. Litera Zee School, Zuarinagar, took third place, also on eight match points, with 15 total points.

Murgaon High School, Headland Sada, finished fourth with seven match points and 14 total points.

A total of 27 institutions from Mormugao Taluka, Cluster 11, participated in the U-17 boys’ event.

The winning Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Narayan Bandekar School team comprised Rudra P. Gawas, Erwin Marc Albuquerque, Siddh Sanir Rane, Kaushal Chandan Kamal and Pratham Krishna Bhat.

The school has qualified for the State Level Chess U-17 Boys Tournament 2026-27.

The tournament officials included Nikhil N. Naik, physical education teacher at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s; chief arbiter Swapnil Hoble; Mangesh B. Laad, assistant physical education officer, Taluka sports organiser for Mormugao, Cluster 11 Manthan V. Adpaikar; and chess arbiters Suraj Sawant and Pradosh T. Redkar.
