Dalgado Konknni Akademi, in association with Loyola High School, Margao, organised an inter-school Konkani elocution competition on the life and work of Monsignor Sebastiao Rodolfo Dalgado.
The competition was held to encourage students to learn about Dalgado, a Konkani scholar after whom the Akademi is named. Organisers said the programme focused on his contribution to Konkani literature and his continued scholarly work despite illness and physical hardship.
Thirteen schools participated in the competition, which was coordinated by Loyola High School teacher Elliton Fernandes, who is also a member of the Dalgado Konknni Akademi.
The participants were Maffy Pereira of Marina English High School, Verna; Reena Bhomani Patil of Rosary High School, Navelim; Anaiah Pereira of Fatima Convent High School, Margao; Jeniza Fatima Pereira of St Anthony’s High School, Majorda; Siddhi Dessai of Perpetual Succour Convent High School, Navelim; Silburn Cardozo of Assumpta Convent High School, Sarzora; Leann Vas of St Thomas High School, Cansaulim; Janeska Monteiro of Fr Agnel Multipurpose High School, Verna; Velika Fernandes of Maria Bambina Convent High School, Cuncolim; Jasmina Valencia G Braz of Presentation Convent High School, Margao; Anirudh Siddharth Madgaonkar of St Britto High School, Mapusa; Disha Angadi of Holy Spirit Institute, Margao; and Vanaisha Elrikah Vaz of Our Lady of Carmel High School, Curtorim.
Anthony Menezes, Armando Fernandes and Dilip Naik judged the competition.
Janeska Monteiro secured first place. Anaiah Pereira finished second, while Jeniza Fatima Pereira took third place.
Dalgado Konknni Akademi president Fr Myron Jeson Barreto congratulated the participants and thanked the management and staff of Loyola High School for organising the event.
He urged students to read, write and speak Roman Konkani, and encouraged them to become ambassadors of the language.
Fr Jimmy Mendes, vice-principal of Loyola High School; Anthony San Fernandes, vice-president of Dalgado Konknni Akademi; and Agnelo Borim, the Akademi’s secretary, were among those present on the dais.
